In the 19th century, Geneva was the city of Rousseau more than that of Calvin. While « Upper Geneva » loathed Rousseau, « Lower Geneva » devoted a veritable cult to him—one that eventually prevailed. Yet, starting in the 20th century, Rousseau’s image faded, giving way to that of Calvin.
